Hand Sanitizer Gel and Sanitizer Spray DIY Recipes
If you are having trouble purchasing a Hand Sanitizer or you want a more natural option you could easily make your own. Not only will it be cheaper but will also be chemical free.
I have two DIY recipes here, one for a Hand Sanitizer Gel and the other is a Sanitizer Spray which is great to spray on hard surfaces when you're out and about (tables, trolley handles etc.)
Hand Sanitizer Gel
For the Hand Sanitizer Gel you will need:
- 10 drops Pure Tea Tree Oil
- 10 drops Cinnamon, Rosemary, Orange or Eucalyptus Oil
- 1/4 cup Aloe Vera Gel Liquid
- 3/4 cup Isopropyl Alcohol 99% (rubbing alcohol)
- 1/4 tsp Vitamin E Oil (optional- will help soften hands)
- Amber glass gel pump bottle or re use one of your old soap dispenser pump spray bottles- (make sure you clean thoroughly before using)
- Small funnel (optional to help to add ingredients to bottle)
Pour all ingredients into a bowl and whisk together. Once mixture has turned into a gel pour into your pump spray bottle.
TEA TREE OIL
Tea tree oil makes an ideal natural hand sanitizer. Tea tree oil has been found in clinical studies to kill most types of bacteria at a concentration of 0.5-1%. Studies have shown that it kills several common bacteria and viruses responsible for causing illness, including E. coli, S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae
Moreover, a study testing several types of hand wash shows that adding tea tree oil to the cleansers boosted their effectiveness against E. coli.
CINNAMON BARK ESSENTIAL OIL
Cinnamon oil is an extremely potent antibacterial essential oil. Since cinnamon essential oil contains cinnamaldehyde, it is used widely for treatment of various ailments and has been reported to kill germs such as viruses and bacteria
ROSEMARY ESSENTIAL OIL
Rosemary oil has preservative qualities so your sanitzer will last at least 6 months.
Eucalyptus oil is a purifying, cleansing, clarifying, and immune-boosting oil that supports the respiratory system.
PURE ALOE VERA GEL
Aloe Vera has strong anitbacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties, it can keep skin clean and free of infection with its antiseptic and antimicrobial agents. It is full of powerful antioxidants. Aloe is also very moisturizing and soothing to the skin. So while you are cleansing your hands of germs you will also be treating your skin.
ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL 99%
According to "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)" it says alcohol-based hand sanitizers must contain at least 60% alcohol to be effective. Alcohol kills germs by breaking down its cell walls. Most hand sanitizers using isopropyl or ethanol are an effective virus killer against infections like herpes and the flu, and isopropyl is even more effective against bacteria.
DIY Sanitizer Spray
For this recipe, you will only need two ingredients, essential oils and witch hazel. You can use Isopropyl Alcohol instead of witch hazel if it is available.
The essential oils I am using in this spray are great for cleansing, purifying, and boosting the immune system. Boosting the immune system naturally can be the best way to prevent sickness.
- Witch Hazel or Isopropyl Alcohol
- 3 drops Sweet Orange Oil
- 3 drops Tea Tree Oil
- 3 drops Cinnamon Bark Oil
- 3 drops Rosemary Oil
- 3 drops Eucalyptus Oil
- 50ml Amber glass spray bottle
- Add the essential oils to the bottle
- Fill the rest of the bottle with Witch Hazel
- Shake well before each use
- Spray on hands and rub together or spray on surface and wipe.
Like most citrus essential oils, sweet orange has cleansing and purifying properties making it great for sanitizing and cleaning. Sweet orange is a photosensitive oil and should not be used before going into direct sunlight.
TEA TREE OIL
Tea tree oil contains a number of compounds, including terpinen-4-ol, that have been shown to kill certain bacteria, viruses and fungi (Terpinen-4-ol also appears to increase the activity of your white blood cells, which help fight germs and other foreign invaders.
Cinnamon also has antibacterial properties. The cinnamon essential oil also has immune-boosting properties.
Rosemary acts as a natural preservative and adds shelf-life to this product when added in. This essential oil also has cleansing and purifying properties that can help to keep germs away.
Eucalyptus is one of my favourite smelling essential oils and can work wonders for respiratory issues. Like all the oils listed above, it also has cleansing and purifying properties and can naturally boost the immune system.
